Readers & Their Ridiculous Lack of Sleep

Hello my lovely bookish friends!

Welcome to the latest post where I try to explain the ridiculous habits of readers and why they make the most sense imaginable to us. I am honestly debating on turning this into a series because there are so many quirks that readers have, and they really ONLY make any senses to other reads. People outside of the book/reader community don't get it one bit.

My non-reader friends there is something you need to understand... 1 more chapter can never just be 1 more chapter. It may start off that way, we might go to bed or be sit in our comfy chair while the house is quiet and think "one more chapter then time to go to sleep". The reality of a reader's brain is that one more chapter will turn into more chapters because we NEED to know what is going to happen next. Or because the tension is building and we might get one of those amazing trope moments that we absolutely die for! When it comes to the 'One More Chapter' debate, we will never win. Reader's will always lose because we need to carry on, we need to get further into the story, and we are craving the excitement of finishing the book. Don't get me started on whether that book ends on a cliffhanger and we are required to see where the next book starts!

We also find immense joy in reading a book until our eyes are itching with sleep. If said reader is a parent, there is a joy to reading when the house is quiet and the children are asleep that makes getting lost in a book feel 10x better. Although we tend to regret staying up until ungodly hours the night before reading our current book, we love the peace and how easy it is to lose track of all sense of time. Falling into the vibes and journey of the characters, making it easy to fly through it. Which often leaves us with completing the book that night, then loops us right back to the ridiculous hour of night where we finally lay our heads down and close our eyes.

I have read books that have left me sobbing, barely able to read the pages of what is happening because I am a complete and total mess. The emotional damage inflicted by books can last well past the moment or even the completion of the book. Even when we know it is time to go to bed, you can find a reader lying there staring at the ceiling thinking about that moment of emotional damage and how much it hurts straight to our soul. How bad we wish to jump into those pages and hold our favourite characters. Console the beautiful characters that leave an impact on our hearts and make reading worth every minute.

Finally, don't get me started on theorising. Whether it be a highly hyped series or an up and coming indie author series. There is something mixed into the blood of avid readers that make theorising and falling down that rabbit hole on socials so exciting. It is like finding your people, a community that loves talking about the same series that you adore. While I love reading for the vibes and enjoying the ride, I'm not so much some one who wants to spend every waking minute deep diving what ever single sentence written means. I love watching and sharing other creators thoughts on books. It amazes me how someone can put together receipts on why their theory makes perfect sense, and I am all for it. The amount of times I have stayed awake well into the wee morning hours, falling down the rabbit hole of theories and what different things mean in the world of the book I am currently or have enjoyed previously.

I will forever be someone that is up well past their bedtime reading. I always have been and I love the idea that it will never stop being a thing for me. I know it doesn't make any sense to non-readers, I know you guys think one chapter is enough. For other readers like me. It's just not a thing, we have accepted our fate. I think it's time that everyone else has too, just let us do what brings us joy and happiness!
